Poppleton is a village tennis club close to York with six floodlit tennis courts (three hard and three artificial clay) and one floodlit padel court, which is newly built. We seek continually to develop and improve our facilities and our offer to members and the community.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Poppleton Tennis Club wishes to appoint a Head Coach to deliver a comprehensive and inclusive coaching programme, on the retirement of our long-standing and highly successful Head Coach, Belinda Turnbull. We are looking for an enthusiastic coach with excellent organisational skills who has the ability to inspire the love of tennis and padel. The successful candidate will play a key role in enhancing member engagement, growing participation, and maintaining a high standard of coaching for juniors and adults.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Manage and continue to develop, a comprehensive coaching programme for tennis, serving the members and the community
  • Work with the clubs Padel Coach to deliver an appropriate coaching and development programme
  • Maintain and develop both group and individual coaching programmes
  • Working with the committee, maintain and increase participation and membership at the club, driving new initiatives
  • Competently manage the administration involved in running the coaching programme, ensuring fees are collected and recorded, registers kept, members/non-members noted, courts booked, etc. Poppleton Tennis club makes an annual contribution, currently £3,000, towards costs.
  • Develop, promote and deliver tennis holiday camps during the Easter (1 week) and summer (2 weeks) holidays for juniors liaising with the club regarding administration/promotion and providing a set of accounts at the conclusion.
  • Manage and recruit as needed, our team of Assistant Coaches, including ensuring their accreditation and DBS certification is up to date. Encourage and mentor individuals to take coaching qualifications
  • Co-ordinate and manage junior teams, including liaison with parents
  • Organise and deliver internal junior and adult club competitions and tournaments
  • Maintain and develop relationships with local schools
  • Assist Team Captains with decisions about playing levels to inform team selection, as required
  • Ensure Risk Assessments are up to date for all coaching activities, including any risks to maintaining a safe and inclusive tennis environment
  • Collect details of next of kin, allergies and other relevant health information and ensure consent forms are completed
  • As part of our commitment to inclusion, explore the potential to offer tennis/padel sessions to special needs groups e.g. learning disability, neurodivergent
  • Ensure and promote equality of opportunity, respecting diversity and recognising the needs of different groups and individuals

COURTS / EQUIPMENT

  • Provide own equipment (balls etc) for lessons
  • Leave activity areas clean and tidy and ready for next customer/coach, storing any equipment in the correct place
  • Ensure the safety and well-being of all customers and advise the maintenance team of any issues over court safety or disrepair

REPORTING

  • Report to the Tennis Club Committee and Club Chairperson
  • Attend committee meetings when necessary
