Yorkshire Player Development Centres

Thongsbridge tops YPDC leaderbaord for 2025

Eight clubs – Thongsbridge, Graves, Ilkley, Nuffield, Yorks St John, David Lloyd Harrogate, Roundhay and Bradford Grammar – were selected to take part in an initiative launched earlier this year designed to boost the number of junior players capable of competing at county, regional and national level.

The new Yorkshire Player Development Centres (YPDCs) were tasked with providing a clear pathway for young players over the age of seven to reach their full potential, with the more talented players progressing to the Regional Player Development Centre at Leeds Beckett.

Each club receives a retainer from Yorkshire Tennis in return for delivering against key performance indicators, including LTA and Yorkshire Tennis priorities for junior coaching, coach  development, community outreach, developing links with schools and maintaining high safeguarding standards.

They are also measured on the number of junior players who enter the County Championships, with extra financial rewards if players represent Yorkshire in County Cup competitions or progress to the Regional Player Development Centre at Leeds Beckett University.

In addition there’s an opportunity to claim a share of an end-of-year bonus pot based on overall performance. But clubs falling short of the required standard can lose their YPDC status, providing an opportunity for new YPDCs to be selected, and a cohort of ‘aspiring’ development centres has been identified to keep the eight YPDCs on their toes!

At the end of the first year of the initiative, Thongsbridge came top of the leaderboard.

General manager and head coach Nick Fitzpatrick said: “It’s a tribute to the hard work of the whole coaching team and the achievements of our young players that we’ve come out top but there’s no room for complacency as the initiative continues to push clubs to achieve higher standards.”

About the Yorkshire Player Development Centres

The initiative is aimed at Associate Member Clubs which have large coaching programmes and continue to produce junior players capable of competing at county, regional and national level. These clubs are mainly larger clubs with indoor facilities, though smaller clubs that also have indoor facilities and outdoor clubs with large coaching programmes may also fit the criteria. Eight clubs have been selected as Yorkshire Player Development Centres for 2025, with a further six clubs named as ‘aspiring’ player development centres:

Purpose of the initiative

The primary purpose of Yorkshire Player Development Centres and Aspiring Yorkshire Player Development Centres (YPDCs/AYPDCs) is to provide a pathway for children over the age of 7 to over time reach their full potential. We want these Centres to work with Yorkshire Tennis to help players achieve their full potential and produce future County Players, County Champions and for the more talented players to progress to the Regional Player Development Centre (RPDC).
We also want YPDCs/AYPDCs to work with and support Yorkshire Tennis in other ways such as Increasing participation, Implementing Community outreach and School links, Support inclusivity and the Open Court Programme, develop Coaches and deliver quality Coaching programmes, Support County Training and organise Club Competitions such as Graded events, Play your way to Wimbledon etc.

In addition, we want these Centres to improve performance in some key areas which align with priorities linked to County Cup outcomes, County Championships and our Regional Player Development Centre. We already have Clubs who are delivering many of these things, and we believe it is right to incentivise these Clubs to further improve as well as encourage other Clubs to achieve these same high standards. This initiative aims to do this.

6. Develop mutually beneficial relations with Yorkshire Tennis

How it works

We will appoint up to eight YPDCs who will each receive a retainer payment and will be financially incentivised to deliver four key performance indicators which are outlined below. For those clubs that do not meet YPDC standard we may award Aspiring YPDC status. The difference being that Aspiring YPDCs will not receive a retainer but will be able to compete for funds as outlined at KPI 2, 3 and 4. It is planned that the scheme will run for a minimum of three years and potentially longer.

Selection process

There are minimum standards to be met to achieve YPDC/AYPDC status which will be via an application process. A panel will consider the applications and decide which Clubs are awarded YPDC/AYPDC status. Only YPDCs will receive a financial Retainer though YPDCs and AYPDCs will be incentivised to earn additional funds based on their contribution to Key Performance Indicators. For those Clubs selected an agreement will be drawn up to sign.

Key performance indicators

What are the KPIs, how are they measured and what are the expected outcomes?
The following describes each of our four key performance indicators, along with the incentivised payments, performance measures and expected outcomes.

Key Performance Indicator 1 – Deliver key LTA and YTL priorities
Each YPDC will receive a retainer payment of up to £3000 depending on the categorisation awarded – see Appendix for criteria. As a minimum they will be expected to deliver:
– Junior Coaching programme
– Coach Development programme
– Community Outreach programme
– School Links programme
– Inclusivity programme including Open Court participation
– Hold regular LTA Competitions including Play your way to Wimbledon
– High Safeguarding Standards
– Work Closely and Cooperatively with Yorkshire Tennis

How Measured – Applicant Clubs are required to explain how they meet all the above criteria as part of the application process and YTL will monitor this.
Expected Outcome – To be an exemplar of good practice to Clubs and raise outcomes and standards

Key Performance Indicator 2 – Number of Juniors entering County Championships singles events plus one doubles event (where one exists) as follows:
Over 10 Players – £250
Over 15 Players – £500
Over 20 players – £750
Over 25 Players – £1000
Over 30 Players – £1250

How Measured – Name of YPDC/AYPDC specified by competing player at entry and confirmed by Referee
Expected Outcome – To significantly increase the number and quality of juniors entering the County Championships singles and doubles events

Key Performance Indicator 3 – Juniors representing Yorkshire in County Cup Competition
YPDC/AYPDC are incentivised to produce players capable of representing Yorkshire County teams from 8 and under to 18 and under.
For each unique player who plays in a County Cup Team the YPDC/AYPDC will receive £100.

How Measured – Name of YPDC/AYPDC where the junior is coached at and confirmed by the player
Expected Outcome – To enhance our County Cup Race prospects

Key Performance Indicator 4 – Junior full-time players who make it onto the LTA Longlist and are eligible for access to the Regional Player Development Centre
YPDC/AYPDC are incentivised to produce players capable of progressing to the Regional Player Development Centre as follows: The YPDC/AYPDC to receive up to £1000 per player for each junior full-time player who makes it onto the LTA Longlist

How Measured – Name of YPDC/AYPDC where the junior is coached at and confirmed by the player
Expected Outcome – To develop players of RPDC standard leading to more being developed

Budget allocated for 2025
KPI 1 – Retainer – £16,000
KPI 2 – Juniors entering County Championships – £4,000
KPI 3 – Juniors representing Yorkshire in County Cup Competition – £7,500
KPI 4 – Juniors who make the LTA Longlist for access to the Regional Player Development Centre – £6000
End of year Bonus Pot – £2500
Total – £36,000

Please Note:
1 The maximum overall sum available to YPDCs and AYPDCs for 2025 is £36000
2 A maximum earnings cap of £7500 will apply to each YPDC/AYPDC
3 Should the Budget for KPIs 2, 3 and 4 be overspent then the monetary allocation to YPDCs and Aspiring YPDCs will be based on their percentage share of the KPI funding pot to remain within budget

Bonus Pot and Dashboard placings
A Bonus Pot will be made available to the top 8 participants based on their performance related earnings excluding their retainer. This provides a level playing field for all participating Clubs.

Points will be allocated depending on where YPDCs and AYPDCs end up in respect of each Key Performance Indicator. For example, a YPDC or AYPDC with the highest earnings on each KPI will receive 8 points and the YPDC or AYPDC with the lowest earnings will receive 1 point. No points will be allocated beyond 8th position. Points will be added in respect of each Key Performance Indicator to determine the overall position on the dashboard. YPDCs or AYPDCs will then receive a bonus depending on where they finish on the final dashboard as follows:
First – £600
Second – £500
Third – £400
Fourth – £300
Fifth – £250
Sixth – 3 points – £200
Seventh – £150
Eighth – £100
Ninth to sixteen – No Bonus
TOTAL – £2,500 Maximum Pot

Further information

Promotion and Relegation
The top 8 positions on the dashboard will be awarded YPDC Status for the following year subject to YPDC Management Group Confirmation. Therefore, a Clubs Status may change from year to year based on their performance and compliance with the schemes requirements.

Payment
The Retainer is to be paid at the beginning of the year, and the incentivised payments at the end of the year.

Scheme Flexibility
This model is flexible and can at the sole discretion of YTL be adapted to meet LTA and YTL priorities including the number of YPDCs/AYPDCs, Key Performance Indicators, incentivisation, quantum, budget, categorisation and status etc.

Review
An annual review of performance will take place between YTL and YPDCs/AYPDCs and additional reviews will take place as necessary.

Termination
The Scheme will be reviewed at the end of the year and if the expected benefits are not evident YTL may decide to end or revise the scheme. If, however, the scheme is beneficial but one or two YPDCs or AYPDCs fall short of the required standard then these YPDCs and AYPDCs may lose their status which would then provide an opportunity for new YPDCs and AYPDCs to be selected.

In addition, YTL may terminate the agreement of any YPDC or AYPDC who in its view has behaved in a way that is not compatible with their Status. Examples may include Safeguarding issues, gaming the system and any other behaviour likely to bring the YPDC, AYPDC or Yorkshire Tennis into disrepute.

Governance
This scheme is managed by the Yorkshire Player Development Centre Management Group which is Chaired by Nick Fitzpatrick – Head of Performance. Where within the Group a conflict of interest arises that person must declare the conflict and where necessary will be required to step aside.

Disputes
Any disputes should be forwarded to Nick Fitzpatrick for consideration by the Yorkshire Player Development Centre Management Group.

Agreement between YTL and Club.
The YPDC/AYPDC will be required to sign an agreement to state that they accept the terms and conditions set out in the Agreement and will ensure that the money received from Yorkshire Tennis is recycled into the Coaching Programme and that Club Coaches are incentivised to develop junior players to their full potential. This must be signed by an Officer or Person within the Club with delegated authority to sign.
