Ranson wins Wimbledon

A member of the Sheffield Beauchief Club, Paul Ranson, has won the British Masters Grass Court Championships in the 55+ age group.

Playing on the courts of Aorangi Park he won all rounds in straight sets, none ‘worse’ than 6-4 and with an overall games ratio of 48 to 17.

Previous GB titles were Parks Men’s Doubles, and Father & Son, (both with father Ray) & after the latter they represented GB in Europe but lost to Newcombe and Newcombe (older readers will understand this!). Sheffield titles included both the singles and doubles in the Sheffield & District Annual closed tournament. He became county champion at both singles and doubles, and was a member of the full county side at County Week for a number of years, winning group 1 twice. In the decades since he has played in all the age group county sides, usually playing down an age group.
For some ten years he played for a Frankfurt club in the German Bundeslieg, at one time flying out there for a weekend match.

His career limited his participation in local tennis until recently but maybe that is about to change!
