CONGRATULATIONS TO SOUTH YORKSHIRE, winners of the very first Yorkshire Tennis District Cup, featuring teams from the county’s five districts – South Yorkshire, Kirklees, York, North & West Yorkshire and East Yorkshire – taking part in the tournament hosted last weekend by Bradford Grammar School.
With a round robin format, eight players per team and 16 rubbers played per tie, the weekend saw a total of 160 matches played, ensuring plenty of court time and matchplay for the county’s up and coming players. The Kirklees team were runners up, while York finished in third place.
Competitions lead Jonny Moore said: “The matches were played in great spirit, with a really positive atmosphere throughout the tournament. District training on Sundays is a great option to boost players’ practice schedules in addition to their regular club training. The sessions involve a two-hour squad practice and match training bringing together like-minded players at a similar level in the 8&U and 9&U age groups, facilitated by lead district coaches.”
Yorkshire Tennis 10&U county coach John Loughton said: “Yorkshire district training was set up last September to give more players training and match-play opportunities. On average, there have been over 80 players regularly attending across the five districts on a weekend. The success of the inaugural Yorkshire Tennis District Cup means this will definitely become a regular fixture in the competition calendar for the county in future!
