Sheffield/Yorkshire tennis players John Andrews and Wilf Jessop had an outstanding week at the National Veterans Tennis Championships at Tipton last week, with both players securing victory in their respective singles and doubles events.
Wilf, who plays at Hallam Grange Tennis Club and Hallamshire Tennis Club, had to battle his way through a number of close matches in 70’s age group. He defeated Peter Pharo in the quarter final, coming from a break of serve down in each set and saving a match point and had an equally tough battle before overcoming Clive Small in the semi-final. In the final, Wilf faced Alex Templer, the top seed, title-holder and world no.26, who had beaten him in last year’s semi final. This time Wilf managed to avenge that defeat with a 7-5 6-3 victory.
John, from Hallamshire TC, had a more comfortable route to the title in the 80+ singles, playing four rounds without losing a set and only conceding 5 games.
Both John and Wilf also went on to win their respective doubles finals in straight sets. Wilf and his partner Neil McPherson from Staffordshire won the 70+ age group without losing a set. John and partner Peter Bretherton of Chapel Allerton Tennis Club, won the the 75+ title, which included a victory over Roger Taylor, former world no.8 and partner, in the semi-final.
