Mark Busby – General Secretary, Sheffield & District LTA
I have been volunteering as General Secretary of the Sheffield and District LTA since February 2017. My love for tennis started when I was a junior playing in my native Pembrokeshire at Haverfordwest Lawn Tennis Club where I followed in the footsteps of my mother who is a very keen tennis player. My daughters have also followed me into the sport and it was their enthusiasm to play league matches that first wetted my appetite to volunteer and I embarked on the challenge of organising the 12U junior team for Moorgate Lawn Tennis Club playing in the Sheffield & District Junior League in 2013. This led me to get involved in the Committee at Moorgate helping in the development of the Junior section of the club.
Through my involvement with the juniors and my participation in the Men’s Leagues, I was asked whether I would consider volunteering for the role of General Secretary for SDLTA. It was an honour to be asked, although a little daunting as I was unsure what was involved, and the outgoing Secretary’s shoes were very big to fill.
It is a very fulfilling and rewarding all year-round role and I enjoying assisting in ensuring the people of the Sheffield & District area have a variety of league tennis available to them. My main duties include the organising and minute taking of Committee Meetings, Council Meeting and Annual General Meetings, of which there are a minimum of 9 meetings annually. I regularly engage with all our member club Secretaries, dealing with any queries regarding the league and on rare occasions review any disputes that may arise. Alongside this I also assist our League Secretary at the busy time of collating league entries and reviewing league fixtures. We have a number of Ladies, Men’s and Mixed leagues through the Summer, Late Summer and Winter seasons, so the role is an all year-round commitment.
On top of the General Secretary role (and my day job!), I am also involved in the organising and running of the Mini & Junior Leagues. I see this as a very important aspect of the association to ensure the game of tennis and access to league tennis continues to be available and develops at the grass roots level.
I would thoroughly recommend and encourage volunteering to anyone who has some spare time, a desire to help, inspire and support our leagues and sport.
