Historic double victory for Yorkshire Tennis in the Winter County Cup 2023

History was made at the Winter County Cup in November 2023 with both Yorkshire Women and Men winning Group One making Yorkshire double national champions. This is the first time this has been achieved in over 100 years since the competition started.

Yorkshire Women last finished first in the top group of this competition in 2010 and the Men in 1992 but have never both won Group One at the same time. This was made even more special as the competition was held on Yorkshire soil at Graves Health & Sports Centre in Sheffield. It’s been a while since the County Cup has even been held in Yorkshire but this was reward for the achievement of Yorkshire being crowned overall County Cup Race winners in 2022. What success in back-to-back years!

Some fantastic tennis was on display superseded only by a tremendous team spirit and lots of true Yorkshire grit.

Many congratulations to all players, captains, officials, coaches and others who made this happen. It was also great to see such strong support for Yorkshire each day.

Women’s Team, captained by Richard Crabtree, included:
Alice Brook
Brontë Murgett
Elena Bompieri
Lidia Burrows
Molly Robinson
Orla Cooper
Sarah Copley

Strong and fiercely competitive matches were won against Hampshire & Isle of Wight 7-2, Northumberland 6-3 and Surrey 6-2 (last rubber not played)

Men’s Team, Captained by Steve McLoughlin, included:
Finn Murgett
Luke Johnson
Joe Newman-Billington
Johannes Monday
Jordan Reed-Thomas

They dominated all teams with wins of 8-1 over Essex, 9-0 in the Battle of the Roses v Lancashire and 6-0 v Kent as the last 3 rubbers were not played.

Yorkshire Tennis Board member and Performance Lead, Karen Mitchell commented; “I’ve been involved with Yorkshire Tennis for many decades, but this has to be one of the best things ever. I’m so incredibly proud of all the players. Truly amazing achievement which shows just how strong Yorkshire is.”

The Winter County Cup is a one-off three-day weekend event, taking place at venues around the nation every year. The 44 counties are placed in 22 groups of four counties per gender. These groups are placed in order of the previous year’s results with Group One being the ‘premier league’.
